Garland Allen, devoted husband, loving father, brother, uncle and friend, exchanged his earthly home for his heavenly home March 30, 1999, in the Crockett County Care Center following a lengthy, courageous battle with numerous life threatening diseases.
Services were held Thursday, April 1, at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church with Brother Bill Fuller, assisted by Rev. Nelson Lanham, officiating. Arrangements were made by Preddy Funeral Home.
He was born March 4, 1919 in Stephenville to George E. Allen and Bertha Kiker Allen with a twin brother who proceeded him in death. The large family of nine children moved to Lubbock where he resided until joining the First Calvary Division of the Fifth Calvary in June 1941. S/Sgt Allen proudly served his country, spending time in Australia, New Guinea, and the Philippines in some of the major campaigns of World War II. He earned the Distinguished Unit Badge, the Purple Heart, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, American Defense Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was wounded in the liberation of the Philippines and carried scrap metal in his leg for the rest of his life.
Discharged from the service in October 1945, he moved to Ozona to be a "doddlebugger" in the oil industry with his brother. Later he worked for the Pridemore Brothers before becoming owner of Ozona Oil Company until he retired in 1971. Upon retirement he spent his time fishing, golfing, and making crafts.
In August of 1947 he married the former Betty Cooke of Ozona. They celebrated 50 years of marriage in 1997. The couple was blessed with a sone who was his pride and job. George E. Allen resides in West Palm Beach, FL.
Garland was a gentle, quiet, honest man, devoted to his family and friends. he will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his wife, Bett, and son George; the family of Ted and Gail Spence who were so special to him; three sisters: Writa Kitchen, Tressie Exum, and Laree Senn, all of Lubbock; two brothers, H.O. Allen of Big Lake and Dale Allen of Coolidge; along with numerous nieces and nephews and special friends Veronica Tijerina and Georgia Rivera.
Pallbearers were: Jerry Perry, Mike Vordick, Ted Spence, Lonnie Dorris, Rick Bird, and Jim Caldwell. Honorary Pallbearers were: Carl Thurman, Dan Cullins and Travis Vordick.
