About Us

Preserving the Past, Enriching the Future

The Crockett County Historical and Scientific Commission was officially established on April 21, 1939, with a mission to collect, preserve, and share the rich history and folklore of Crockett County and the broader West Texas region. Originally formed to support historical research and gather artifacts of historical value, the organization also aimed to establish a local museum in Ozona to house these important relics. Over time, the name was simplified to the Crockett County Historical Commission, reflecting its deep community roots and ongoing public mission.

The Commission’s founding officers included Houston Smith (President), C.S. Denham (Vice-President), Wanda Watson (Secretary-Treasurer), and Directors Evart White, Joe Davidson, A.C. Hoover, and Mrs. B.B. Ingham—a dedicated team who laid the groundwork for generations of historical preservation.

Today, the Crockett County Historical Commission operates independently and is overseen by its own board. The Commission remains focused on maintaining Texas Historical Markers, documenting cemeteries, collecting genealogical records, and preserving the unique heritage of this region. One of our major current projects is the completion of an extensive inventory and mapping of the Cedar Hill and Lima Cemeteries, as well as research for Volume II of A History of Crockett County.

We are proud to be stewards of our county’s stories, places, and people.
