JACK BAGGETT Obituary
OZONA - With family and loved ones by his side, Jack Baggett Sr. passed from this life on Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at his home in Ozona, Texas, at the age of 82. He was born in San Angelo, Texas, on July 11, 1921, to Ele Bright Baggett Jr. and Alyce Odom Baggett, pioneer Crockett County ranching families. Growing up in Ozona, Mr. Baggett graduated from Ozona High School and was among the first in Ozona to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. He attended Texas AandM University and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, achieving the rank of staff sergeant. On Dec. 26, 1941, Jack married Billie Gene Linthicum at the Linthicum ranch home near Barnhart. They ranched in Reagan, Pecos and Crockett counties where he took a great deal of pride in his Rambouillet sheep. In addition, he owned and managed The Baggett Insurance Agency until 1983. Mr. Baggett was a devoted member of the Ozona United Methodist Church, serving in many capacities including chairman of the administrative board, lay leader and choir member. In addition to serving his church, Mr. Baggett was past president of the Ozona Lions Club, Crockett County Hospital Board, Ozona Country Club, OB Trap Company and was charter secretary of the Ozona Chamber of Commerce. He was also a past director of Ozona Wool and Mohair Company, Ozona Community Center and had served on the Crockett County Tax Appraisal Board. Most recently, he served as one of the organizing directors of Crockett National Bank and serves as a trustee of the Massie Memorial Foundation. In 1998, Mr. Baggett was voted Ozona's "Unsung Hero" by the Ozona Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Baggett was known to all as an honest, caring and gentle man. Above all, however, he will be best remembered for his unfailing love and devotion to Billie Gene, his wife of 60 years, and the loving care he provided her during the last years of her life. In addition to the enjoyment received from the Baggett Ranch south of Ozona and the Alto, N.M., vacation home, Jack's greatest pleasure was flying. He was an avid aviation enthusiast earning an instrument rating and owning and flying his Bonanza until just a few years ago. He and Billie Gene especially enjoyed flying to Ruidoso where they played golf and enjoyed the mountains. Mr. Baggett was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Billie Gene, in 2001; daughter, Rebekah "Baby Sister" Baggett; grandson, Rhett Pierce Miller; brother, Ele Baggett of Lufkin; sisters, Rebekah Baggett West and Vivian Baggett Clayton of Ozona. He will be deeply missed by those who survive him including daughters, Betty Baggett Miller and husband, Pierce, of San Angelo and Joanie Baggett Bradley of McKinney; and son, Jack Baggett Jr. and wife, Jodie, of Ozona. Affectionately known as Granddaddy, Mr. Baggett is survived by grandchildren, Camille Miller Yale and husband, Ed, of Austin, Clay Bradley of Whitefish, Mont., Chad Bradley of Austin, Chase Bradley of McKinney and Philip Baggett of Ozona. Also surviving him are three great-grandchildren, Marshall, Rob and Vivian Yale of Austin; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Lad and Sue Linthicum of San Angelo; sister-in-law, Mary Jule Baggett of Lufkin; and several nieces and nephews.
